The GP2D12 produces an analog signal, so start by reading the ATmega16 data
sheet section "Analog to Digital Converter". There's also a condensed (and fairly
readable) description of the ADC at avrbeginners.net (http://www.avrbeginners.net).
I wrote something to talk to a GP2D12 some years ago, but I can't seem to
find it now. As I recall I just attached Vo directly to ADC0 and AREF to AVcc,
(no signal conditioning to speak of) and it was very well-behaved.
I don't want to be in the position of pointing you away from NMI's (excellent)
Forum, but there is a very active AVR user Forum over at AVRFreaks (http://www.avrfreaks.net)

Don't worry, McKenney, we don't mind. Not in this case anyway. We don't make a product which has a ATmega16 in it. So a public forum would be a much better place to ask.
The forum here is for our customers. Lately it seems to be bombed by spam and noncustomers. I'm glad they can get their answers, but it would be better if they didn't use our forum. Our customers didn't ask to hear their non-product related questions, and some have chosen to be notified on every post. I feel I need to appologize to them for getting spam, but it is not of my making or choosing, and I have no idea how to prevent it. To have a truly open forum, where we can answer our customers questions and others can read, means we are open to having the system abused. Such is the balance. I hope our customers will be tolerant.
