sorry - this is a software guy talking.

I am wondering if I run any risks if I use 28 gauge ribbon cable as a conduit for servo wiring. I don't anticipate any heavy consistent loads, and the use of ribbon connectors will simplify the mechanical connections part of the animatronics I have to work on. But in the experience of those of you using Servopods, will this be likely to result in problems? The average length of lead would be about 20 cm ( 8 inches ).

If my memory is correct then the IDC connectors are rated for 1A per pin. I have seen D-Sub to IDC adapters rated at 3A.
I tend to use added IDC pins if I want a safety margin and no smoke... :-)
It is certainly neat compared to many single wires...

Cheers from TO,

Per.

The 28 gauge wiring is on the marginal side, depending on the size of your servos. Some servos can draw "amps" when moving. See http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm and notice they claim 1.4A for chasis wiring (not bundled, open air) but 226mA for power transmission.

Short story is, for short runs to small servos, you're probably okay. For medium to large servos, your wire is going to get hot, and you will deliver less power to the servo.
