When I started using steppers, L/R drive was the only thing in the application notes. Superior Electric's engineers couldn't understand why I wanted a 6-lead motor. They were amazed to see a motor running up to 2000 sps when their data said it should crap out at 360. A 6-lead motor simplified my circuit.
A lot has changed since then, and good drivers now accomplish electrically what once was done with inertial dampers. I haven't done any stepper work in about 15 years, but I'd be glad to swap (possibly valuable) experience for information about new trends.
----------
Engineering is the art of making what you want from things you can get.
